JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:       Setup Welder                                       JOB CODE:

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE:  Under the direction of the General Supervisor, the Setup Welder works from engineering drawings and a Bill of Materials to fabricate and weld conveyor casings, tracks and components to produce the highest quality products at the lowest possible cost, while meeting departmental performance standards, and customer specifications and delivery requirements, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.  

Using wire feed welder, weld casings and tracks together according to blueprints and Bill of Materials.

 Accurately measure and lay out holes and locations for welded components.

 Adjust welder as needed to accommodate varying thicknesses of steel.  

Operate grinder, drill, bandsaw, ironworker, torch and crane as assigned.

 Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documentation, etc.  

Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations.  Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.

 Assist in training new employees in the safe and most efficient use of fabricating and welding methods.

 MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Occasionally travels to customers’ facilities to perform service work.  

Works in other departments on an as-needed basis.

 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:  Requires the use of safety glasses and shoes, welding helmet, grinding shield, tight-fitting clothing without tears, hearing protection, and gloves. 

 QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  Requires four years of high school, one year of trades training, and one year of related experience; or a combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as bills of material, blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one with other employees of the organization.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Requires a valid drivers license.  

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:  The employee must possess good mechanical ability and the ability to perform basic calculations to operate welding and fabricating machines.  The employee must have the ability to operate a welder, grinder, bandsaw, ironworker, overhead crane, torch, measuring devices and a variety of hand and power tools.

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee occasionally is required to walk; talk or hear; reach above shoulders; climb or balance; sit; and use foot/feet to operate machine.  

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of ultraviolet radiation and vibration.  The employee occasionally performs work related travel.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, occasionally very loud.
